Excavating the channel required protecting and strengthening the bridge piers supporting the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad. A channeling machine is cutting deep slots in the bedrock surrounding the pier base to maintain the integrity of the pier foundation when blasting occurs, June 9, 1906.
