Boats frequently collided with bridges, both during construction and after the bridge was in service. Repairs are underway on December 7, 1908, after the steamer Eber Ward collided with the upstream face of the Chicago Terminal Railroad bridge, damaging the lower chord and three truss panels of the bridge and tearing a large hole in the port side of the bow of the steamer.
