Laborers are tearing up the wooden deck of the Oakton Street Bridge, October 14, 1921. Before the use of concrete for bridge decks, wood was the material of choice, but it only had a five- to ten-year life, requiring more frequent replacement. To the west, in the left background, on the south side of Oakton Street, are a building, elevated water tank, and gas holding tank, part of the Public Service Company of Northern Illinois’s manufactured gas plant, built in 1910.
