A photo taken on June 7, 1894, shows how manual labor was used to excavate overburden in Section 2. Spoil loaded into the hopper cars was then transported by horse or mule teams to the spoil pile on the northwest side of the Main Channel. Steam locomotives were also used to move the hopper cars.
